Funeral Services and Social Media: How Can They Be Combined?
We must acknowledge that information technology is changing our social lives. Every day we use social networks – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and others. Facebook alone has more than a billion active users, Twitter 974 million, and Instagram 600 million active users, so it is not surprising that even funeral services are influenced by digital technologies. In Lithuania, there are virtual cemeteries sometimes referred to as the “Facebook of the deceased.” There, it is possible to create a virtual grave accessible from anywhere in the world, where people can read obituaries, view photos, and access information about the actual burial site. On social networks, we also share news about the death of a loved one, the burial location, and express condolences to those who have lost someone dear. However, social media also has its own rules and standards of etiquette, especially when discussing sensitive topics such as death and funerals.
Why Is Social Media Etiquette Important?
In today’s world, news of death often reaches us online. Most of us can recall at least one instance of learning about the death of someone we knew — or a public figure — through Facebook. Social media can be a convenient place to share memories of the deceased and express condolences to the family. Whether you have gathered to honor the deceased beside an urn, support their loved ones at the cemetery, or simply wish to express sympathy online, it is essential to remain polite and respectful.
The worst thing you can do is announce a death on social media without contacting the family and receiving their permission. Imagine how upsetting it would be to learn about a family member’s death not personally, but through Facebook. Before posting anything online, always consider the wishes of the deceased’s relatives. The family may have asked guests to refrain from sharing posts during the funeral period. In such situations, the priority is the family and supporting them. If you have been asked not to share any information, you must respect that decision. Some people choose to keep the deceased’s Facebook profile active after death, allowing friends and acquaintances to share memories.
If you decide to post a message or share memories, carefully consider the content. These posts will be read by many people, including the deceased’s loved ones. When news of a death becomes public, you may feel the need to express your emotions and sorrow. This is appropriate, but avoid going into detail. This is especially important regarding sensitive matters, such as the cause of death. If close family members have not shared such information, you should not mention it. Express your sadness, but do not overdo it. Avoid overwhelming the family with private messages or asking for details about the death, particularly if you were not close to the deceased.
If you attend a funeral, avoid using your phone — it is disrespectful. Do not take photos or post pictures on social media. If there are people who cannot attend for certain reasons, taking photos or live-streaming should only be done with the family’s consent. Do not criticize funeral arrangements on social media. For example, if cremation was chosen and you hold strong religious beliefs, refrain from public criticism. Coffins, crosses, and other elements of the ceremony should not become topics of discussion online.
One advantage of social media is the ability to communicate with many people at once. It can be an effective way to organize support for the deceased’s family — such as arranging a memorial meal or collecting financial assistance.
How Social Media Has Expanded Funeral Services
Many people believe that announcing the death of a loved one on social media is impersonal or inappropriate. The older generation, in particular, may find it difficult to understand this practice, especially if they are less familiar with social platforms. In one survey, 77% of respondents stated that they would prefer to receive important life news personally rather than through social media. Nevertheless, Vilniaus Laidojimo Namai believes that social media can be beneficial. It allows news of a death to spread quickly, enables people to express condolences, and helps organize funeral ceremonies and support more efficiently.
Funeral services have expanded significantly in recent years. If it is important to you that as many people as possible participate in the funeral, you may confidently use modern technologies and social channels. Funeral home professionals will ensure that everything proceeds smoothly and respectfully. Social media can also be helpful for those who are grieving, allowing them to stay connected and maintain human relationships during mourning. Although grief is deeply personal, people often seek comfort through communication. However, one should never forget the importance of personal, direct connection.
