The cathedral dates back to the 14th century. In 1415 it became a sobor – the principal Orthodox cathedral of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The building was damaged and rebuilt several times over the centuries, and Gothic masonry survives in its lower part. Its present appearance dates from a 19th-century reconstruction.
