Suzinas Chapel in Vilnius Old Town: a Baroque heritage setting for a peaceful farewell
Suzinas Chapel and mausoleum stands on the grounds of the Franciscan monastery in Vilnius Old Town, beside the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This small yet distinctive Baroque sanctuary marks the site of the former Franciscan cemetery.
This historic setting offers families an opportunity for a dignified, peaceful and meaningful farewell in a place whose history speaks of respect, remembrance and continuity.
A historic place – the Franciscan complex in the heart of Vilnius
The Franciscan church and monastery complex near Trakų Street is one of the oldest sacred and cultural centres in Vilnius. The church at Trakų St. 9 is listed as a heritage site, and Suzinas Chapel stands in its churchyard. Public historical records describe the Franciscan monastery as one of the city’s oldest historic complexes, with origins reaching back to the earliest centuries and a history marked by fires, wars and occupations.
The Old Town masonry, enclosed courtyard and centuries of history create a unique atmosphere that brings calm, pauses the pace of everyday life and helps everyone focus on what matters most: saying goodbye.
What is Suzinas Chapel?
Suzinas Chapel is a Baroque chapel built in 1708. It stands at the junction of Trakų and Pranciškonų Streets, at Trakų St. 9 / Pranciškonų St. 1. Public sources state that it was founded by Mykolas Suzinas and is associated with the site of the former Franciscan cemetery.
Architectural distinction – a trefoil chapel
The chapel is distinctive not only for its history but also for its form: an unusual plan with a vestibule and three rounded apses, domed vaults, and a main façade defined by Baroque pilasters, cornices and a pediment. It is a small architectural landmark within the continuous streetscape of the Old Town.
Restored with respect for its heritage
Historical records mention repairs in the early twentieth century and restoration in 1969. More recently, the chapel was restored using a surviving nineteenth-century photograph showing its rich architectural detail. Vilnius Funeral Home has fully restored the interior in accordance with heritage requirements, preserving its authentic character and atmosphere of reflection for dignified farewells.
What does this place offer for a funeral farewell?
When choosing a place for a farewell, families often seek two things: peace and respect. A historic chapel naturally provides both:
- A peaceful, sacred atmosphere – the enclosed monastery courtyard and historic Old Town setting create a reflective mood.
- A meaningful context – as a chapel and mausoleum, the building is inherently connected with remembrance and funeral traditions.
- A clear location – in Vilnius Old Town at Trakų St. 9 / Pranciškonų St. 1, beside the Franciscan church.
