Inspiring Tips on What to Write in a Sympathy Card

Sympathy cards are a meaningful way to show your support and express respect to someone who is grieving. However, finding the right words can sometimes be difficult. To help you, the coordinators at Vilniaus Laidojimo Namai have prepared a guide with meaningful sympathy phrases and ways to express condolences. We hope you will find an approach that feels right for expressing your feelings.

What Is a Sympathy Card/Letter/Message?

A sympathy card is an appropriate and thoughtful way to express your support and show care to those mourning the loss of a loved one. In a time of deep sadness, it can be a particularly valuable source of comfort — a message that you are thinking of those experiencing loss and, if you are unable to attend the funeral, that you stand in solidarity with their feelings.

Ways to Express Condolences

There is no single universal way to express sympathy for a loss, but respect and support can be shown in many different ways. Below are some of the most common methods that may help you.

A handwritten letter or sympathy card. In today’s modern world, handwritten letters have become quite rare, often replaced by emails and text messages. Taking the time to write a sincere letter by hand demonstrates special care and solidarity. It is a subtle and heartfelt way to express your support to the grieving family. You may write your thoughts, words of comfort, or memories of the deceased on beautiful stationery, place it in an envelope, and send it directly to the funeral home (which may be a touching surprise for the family) or to their home or workplace address. Our funeral home in Vilnius accepts mail and will gladly share your thoughtful gesture with the family.

Social media. An important aspect to consider when expressing condolences on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter is that you should not post about the loss unless the person has publicly shared news of their loved one’s passing — even if your intentions are sincere and kind.

Personal conversation. This is the most intimate way to show your respect. A face-to-face conversation can also help you better understand what kind of support the grieving person or family members need most and how you can best provide it. When expressing condolences, give the grieving person your full attention, observe their body language, and be sensitive to signs of how they are feeling. The conversation should not be too long — what matters most is that your genuine support is felt.

We deeply respect each person’s individuality and understand that during difficult moments, people wish to be surrounded by familiar faces. For this reason, our funeral home organizes only one, at most two, funerals at a time. This ensures that nothing distracts your attention and that you do not encounter unfamiliar people near the viewing hall. It is important to us that you trust us and feel calm and safe during the funeral.

What to Write in a Sympathy Card or Letter?

The purpose of a sympathy message is to show respect for the deceased and offer comfort to their loved ones. Be sincere and avoid cold or overly cliché phrases. You may offer your help, express your feelings, or share fond memories of the deceased.

Greeting

When addressing the family, use the deceased’s name and do not avoid mentioning death directly. During this painful time, hearing or reading the loved one’s name can be comforting. You may begin your letter with a greeting such as: “Dear family of (Name), in this difficult time for all of us…” or “Dear family of (Name), a person whom we will all deeply miss has departed. A part of each of us has gone with them.” You may also begin with a heartfelt expression such as, “I am deeply sorry for your loss.”

Express Your Sympathy Through Appreciation

Kind words and recognition of the deceased’s accomplishments, character, and way of life can bring comfort to grieving loved ones. You may share warm memories or moments when you particularly admired the person who passed away.

Offer Your Help

Grief and funeral arrangements often bring not only emotional stress but also unexpected changes to daily life. When emotions are overwhelming, it can be difficult to manage routine tasks. In solidarity with those experiencing loss, offer practical help — such as assisting with catering during the funeral, helping maintain the viewing hall, or temporarily taking over everyday responsibilities like household chores, childcare, or walking pets. If possible, you may also provide financial assistance.

We hope these tips on writing a sympathy letter or card will be helpful and ease some of your concerns during a difficult time. And most importantly — be sincere.
